Nike Camp Victory

Portland-based Skylab Architecture has designed ‘camp victory’, Nike’s olympic trial pavilion, as a temporary exhibition at the university of Oregon’s Hayward Field. erected over a 17-day period, the three polygonal steel tube frames springing out in different directions are wrapped in translucent white canvas, acting as canopies for diversely themed black display rooms. The structures represents the lightweight construction of their products within a form derived from the kinetic energy of the athletes, reflected throughout every detail of the project. The modified three-lane running track directs pedestrian circulation through the volumes that inform and present the new products in a technological atmosphere of glossy surfaces, LED lights, neon colors, and dynamic spaces that suggest swift fluid movement.

Designed by HWKN architecture firm, Wendy is redefining where a building begins and ends. Along with being outwardly charming and welcoming, Wendy’s fabric covering neutralizes pollutants in the air, provides air circulation with massive fans, and mists museum-goers attending PS1′s Summer Warm Up Series.

Shot on the actual streets of San Francisco, California, GYM5 features a focus on fast, raw and precise driving action. Filmed over four days, director Ben Conrad and his team are back to work on their second Gymkhana production and delivered the entire city of San Francisco as Ken Block’s personal gymkhana playground. DC Shoes also provided fellow DC athlete and longtime Ken Block friend, Travis Pastrana, to make a cameo appearance on his dirtbike, and S.F. resident Jake Phelps of Thrasher Magazine fame also makes a cameo as Block hoons S.F. in his most incredible Gymkhana yet.

Kinetic Rain

In the course of refurbishment works ART+COM was commissioned to create a signature art installation for the Departure-Check-in hall of Terminal 1 at Singapore Airport. “Kinetic Rain” is composed of two parts, each consisting of 608 rain droplets made of lightweight aluminum covered with copper. Suspended from thin steel ropes above the two opposing escalators, each droplet is moved precisely and seemingly floating by a computer-controlled motor hidden in the halls ceiling. The drops follow a 15-minute, computationally designed choreography where the two parts move together in unison, sometimes mirroring, sometimes complementing, and sometimes responding to each other.

URBAN OUTLAW is a portrait of Magnus Walker, the rebel Porsche customizer who turned a hobby into an obsession, and an obsession into a successful business. From a workshop in downtown Los Angeles, Magnus obsessively harvests fragments from donor 911s, grafting them onto vintage frames to create one-off automobiles with the spirit of Ferdinand Porsche but an ethos entirely his own.

A Tiny Glimpse into the Future of Transportation

It’s really inspiring to see the versatility (and project choice) of directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who are mostly known for their horror genre films Paranormal Activity.

Their visual storytelling abilities, coupled with some great pacing and thought provoking music, really captured the claustrophobic & stressful nature of the city while also leaving the viewer with both a cerebral and inspired feeling inside.

Not bad for 3 days and a four man crew!

The reveal of Chris Burden’s entire sculpture at the end was spot on, and not only made me want to visit LACMA to see it in person but also made me want to watch out for this directing duo to see what’s next.

We here at The Family Vibe are suckers for some classic Seinfeld references, so when Rinee Shah created this awesome collection of prints exploring the Seinfeld/food connection, taking notes of how much of the show centered around food and eating, we couldn’t help but share our love for them.

“I’ve been watching Seinfeld since I was a kid,” Shah told Flavorwire. “It never gets old or stops being funny to me, and when you look back at the canon of Seinfeld, so many episodes center around food in a hilarious way.”

A Night-time Snowboarding Short Lights Up the Last of the Winter Snow

Fashion photographer and filmmaker Jacob Sutton swaps the studio for the slopes of Tignes in the Rhône-Alpes region of south-eastern France, with a luminous after hours short starring Artec pro snowboarder William Hughes.

The electrifying film sees Hughes light up the snow-covered French hills in a bespoke L.E.D.-enveloped suit courtesy of designer and electronics whizz John Spatcher. “I was really drawn to the idea of a lone character made of light surfing through darkness,” says Sutton of his costume choice. “I’ve always been excited by unusual ways of lighting things, so it seemed like an exciting idea to make the subject of the film the only light source.” Sutton, who has created work for the likes of Hermès, Burberry and The New York Times, spent three nights on a skidoo with his trusty Red Epic camera at temperatures of -25C to snap Hughes carving effortlessly through the deep snow, even enlisting his own father to help maintain the temperamental suit throughout the demanding shoot. “Filming in the suit was the most surreal thing I’ve done in 20 years of snowboarding,” says Hughes of the charged salopettes. “Luckily there was plenty of vin rouge to keep me warm, and Jacob’s enthusiasm kept everyone going through the cold nights.”
