Fashion photographer and filmmaker Jacob Sutton swaps the studio for the slopes of Tignes in the Rhône-Alpes region of south-eastern France, with a luminous after hours short starring Artec pro snowboarder William Hughes. The electrifying film sees Hughes light up the snow-covered French hills in a bespoke L.E.D.-enveloped suit courtesy of designer and electronics whizz John Spatcher. “I was really drawn to the idea of a lone character made of light surfing through darkness,” says Sutton of his costume choice. “I’ve always been excited by unusual ways of lighting things, so it seemed like an exciting idea to make the subject of the film the only light source.” Sutton, who has created work for the likes of Hermès, Burberry and The New York Times, spent three nights on a skidoo with his trusty Red Epic camera at temperatures of -25C to snap Hughes carving effortlessly through the deep snow, even enlisting his own father to help maintain the temperamental suit throughout the demanding shoot. “Filming in the suit was the most surreal thing I’ve done in 20 years of snowboarding,” says Hughes of the charged salopettes. “Luckily there was plenty of vin rouge to keep me warm, and Jacob’s enthusiasm kept everyone going through the cold nights.”

Orofino Gold Corp. (ORFG.PK) is a Colombia-based gold producer.  This project continues to be an amazing adventure.  The discovery process, like in a good film or book, is what keeps you watching or turning the page.  This was a key element for us to try and integrate into the design – the adventure of discovery.  We’re just thankful all the people involved from China, Canada, the U.S. and Columbia agreed with us and took part in this amazing adventure we eventually dubbed Orofino Gold.

While on a remote location in Africa, shooting at an outdoor basketball court in the country of MALI, a local school from a nearby village must have just gotten out of class as children started walking through these abandoned fields and right by the set.

Imagine if Lebron or Amar’e weren’t allowed to play in the NBA because of their past until they were 29 years old. That’s the Hawk’s life in one sentence.

I showed this spot to the bodyguards of Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire while we were waiting for them inside the back of a bus at the Olympic trials. I remember tears just flowing from behind their sunglasses and hitting their jeans as they watched. The Hawk took them back to what the game used to be like.

I also was able to present this to Connie Hawkins himself on his birthday. He watched it 3 times with headphones on. The first time he viewed it he laughed, the second his eyes filled with tears, and after the third viewing he looked up and thanked me.
